Help with daily routines for a newbie

Hi all,

I'm very new to the forum, in fact, I wasn't even sure where to post this question so here goes...I am having trouble developing a consistent daily routine--I've read the posts on workflow and that's not really what I mean. For example, I want to be a lot more consistent & effective with my email processing and responses. I've adopted the GTD method for zeroing out my inbox, but I don't know how many times a day or for how long I should spend a) processing/delete/defer/etc. and b) actually responding. I'm a professor and typically I respond to their messages within just a few hours b/t 10am & 11pm. Is that too much? And how much time each day should I spend on all of my other emails--again, I'm not looking for tips on how to process email or write more efficient emails--just a daily routine that I can try to stick to.

Thanks!

Actually, this a GREAT GTD question

This place is where I get stuck trying to respond.

What if this question were about garbage and being a garbage man, being the most productive garbage man ever. Then there are only so many ways to haul garbage, so you'll just have spend as much time hauling garbage as is required to get things as clean as you require. So you ask how long? My answer is until things are clean enough. It's a value question, along the lines of how much garbage can you stand.

GTD might make you more projective hauling garbage, and it also might catalog every piece of garbage (which might not necessarily be a good thing either). So GTD makes you both effective and thorough, and it's a system of habits who's core is pretty easy to learn. But maybe you're still wallowing in garbage.

How to get the garbage to stop? You tell me.

If you work 60 hours a week, sleep 50 hours, groom and eat for 14 hours, that gives you 30 hours for all the rest of the stuff. And now you want to take those precious 30 hours and do what? Respond to several dozen attention seeking yahoos aping for a moment of your precious 30 hours?

A practical suggestion which does amuse me because it's the equivalent of a garbage compactor is the 5 sentence e-mail idea which is best explained at http://five.sentenc.es/ .
