Kati Kim's life-saving ingenuity
Merlin Mann | Dec 5 2006
The story of the missing Kim family finally took at least one promising turn yesterday afternoon when Kati Kim and her and James Kim' two daughters were found alive and in amazingly good condition after surviving for 9 days of exposure in what the Chronicle describes as snowy "wilderness." We prattle on quite a lot here about what amounts to "how to put your pants on faster" tricks that can make you more theoretically productive. But, when it comes to real-life life hacking, this woman takes the cake. I swear, if my family and I are ever in a situation like the Kims went through, I hope to God that one person in our group has the clear thinking, make-do ingenuity, and life-saving cleverness of Kati Kim:
I honestly can't imagine I'd ever have the ability to hold it together for nine days in the wilderness -- let alone have the presence of mind to find reflective tape and put it on an umbrella. Man. Go, Kati. I'm sure you all join me in sending good thoughts toward the Kim family as everyone holds their breath and hopes for James's safe location and rescue as soon as possible. A website has been set up to assist in finding James, and there's an email address on that page where you can send good wishes to the family. [link and quote via BB] 34 Comments

Kati Kim is a mother...Submitted by Wondering? (not verified) on December 11, 2006 - 1:53am.
Kati Kim is a mother and I am thinking you would get a whole different thinking process when it comes to your childs survival and not just yours. A mother's instinct is how she did it! I would hope that if she ever reads this she would see the good thoughts in most of us instead of the few Monday morning quarterbacks who ought to be tossed out in the snow for 9 days before they are allowed to post here again..........perhaps their comments would be different. Hats off to Bruno, Arthur and Dave Rivers for reaffirming my faith that there are still plenty of morons left in the world, and at least 3 of them have stumbled into here!!!! I am not here to complain or second guess but one thought keeps coming to my mind. Why, thru all the media coverage, etc. were the only air searches that were conducted all private aircraft? National media reports an entire family missing in the snow with tiny children. Where were our tax dollars at work? I don't know the whole story but I think local government/rescue failed this family. Was there some kind of condition created an official no-fly circumstance for awhile? » POSTED IN:
