My kGTD setup
Merlin Mann | Dec 7 2005
Related to today's earlier post, a number of people have written over the past few weeks with curiosity about kGTD ("Is it worth buying OmniOutliner Pro?" "Is it worth buying a Mac?" "Will I be able to vanquish all foes?"). While I'm not prepared to do a major sales presentation, I am happy to oblige the folks who wanted to see how I've set mine up. Also gives you a little window into my current contexts (as well as my atrocious personal habits). Screenshot here (best viewed full size): comments and questions will be entertained. 52 Comments

The key to interoperability of KGTD and Entourage (and Quicksilver, natch) is to populate one's project folders (Entourage Project view) with text files that can be linked with say email messages and calendar events as per Merlin's MacWorld piece (although they're all visible together in an Entourage project view) and also dragged and dropped into KGTD, where they become hotlinks. Remember, even if Entourage emails and calendar entries aren't hotlinkable into OOL, the folders it links to automatically are in the finder system and can be ... Meanwhile, one can use other OOL documents to work up more complicated arrangements of text file materials, and those OOL documents, guess what, can be hotlinked into KGTD ... So basically contra the poster upthread who works mainly out of his Outlook task view, I use Entourage for everything EXCEPT tasks and starting writing projects, which are what KGTD and OOL are for. (I use Ulysses for writing--I hope someday they make their internal file system OOL compatible and allow imports.) The harmony of my system will be threatened when my schedule heats up in the Spring, and if I figure out how to use the KGTD dates columns & recur feature ... but such duplication is good to have. And anyway, if a task is flexible, it is a task and not really part of the truly "hard landscape" that is my Entourage calendar. » POSTED IN:
