Trusted System Question

What are the elements of a "trusted system"? Notes, Tasks, Lists, ect?

I feel like I need a tool for each of these, I use OmniFocus for tasks, but I dont have anything on my Mac to manage lists and notes? I know Merlin on 43folders talks about using text files but I am not sure how he does that? What other elements do I need to have a complete trusted system?

How do I know when my system is completed?

I have read the book once, I guess I need to read it again. I was really wondering on a Mac what piece of software or system do most GTDers use for keeping up with Lists, Check Lists, someday maybe lists, ect?
