Geek Throwdown: How to sync two or more Macs?
Merlin Mann | Oct 12 2007
Enter the OctagonHere’s an experimental new feature: The Throwdown. Take a problem that lots of people face and tell us your personal favorite way to deal with it — in as much detail and with as much persuasion as you can muster. Today, a lot of us are living on two or more Macs -- which is great, except for the challenge of keeping the contents and settings of multiple machines effortlessly in sync. Now before you pop in, holler "dot mac," and jump back on your Segway®, consider that many folks (including your author) are looking for a lot more than simple document syncing and perfunctory preference sharing. How about if your needs are more nuanced:
You get the idea. You have a system; now tell us about it. Bow to your sensei, then spare no detail. How do you sync your Macs?rsync? ChronoSync? Synchronize? Unison? Something you made yourself? What are using to sync your Macs, and how are you using it? 80 Comments

No perfect solutionSubmitted by leofaoro on October 13, 2007 - 7:35am.
Unfortunately, there is really no easy streamlined solution for this. I use Foldershare, which works most of the time, but I have had an entire library (i.e. all my files) moved to the trash once. Also, it has a limit of 10k files in each library, which I am really stretching at this point. .Mac promised to deliver something we need, and really fails in doing so. Too bad. I am really hoping with the release of Leopard we would get some sort of update for .mac, maybe allowing decent sync. Of course, this is nothing but hope. I have looked at all these solutions mentioned, and some might do the trick, but only after a lot of work. I used to go after this in the past, spending numerous hours trying to achieve something with multiple hacks and such. No more: now I really look for a turnkey solution, so that I can focus on my work instead of the technology surrounding it. This was the reason I switched to Macs 18 months ago. While most of my wishes have been fulfilled, file sync has not yet. » POSTED IN:
