Laptops: A blessing or a curse?
Chanpory Rith | Oct 8 2007
When I got my first laptop, I loved the exhilarating freedom of whipping it out anytime I "needed" it. No matter where I am, I could work on a project, balance a budget, or play a video game. Years later, despite its "convenience", I'm dangerously married to my laptop. It's with me virtually everywhere. On the bus, at work, at home, in bed. And yes, it even goes with me to the toilet--the perfect time for multi-tasking, right? According to my estimate, I spend twice as much time looking at an LCD screen than high-definition reality. My laptop, supposedly handy, is now just an easy excuse to work (or procrastinate) at any time, all the time. I need help, and it's time for an intervention. Do you have an unhealthy marriage with your laptop? Have you switched back to desktops? How have you coped? Please share. 43 Comments

Falling out of love with the laptopSubmitted by isaacszy on October 10, 2007 - 1:04am.
I chose my second job out of college, in 1999, based on which one would issue me a company laptop and cell phone. I was enamored with the technology. Now, 8 years later, I feel sometimes strapped to work by the laptop, cell phone, instant messaging and push mail (even on the iPhone). I had a 3-year stint in there where I used just a desktop PC at work. When I shut it down every night and walked home, I was done. These days, I stay up late working in my home office, where I too plug my 13" MacBook into a 23" flat screen monitor and enjoy every minute of it. When I get sort of tired, I take the laptop to bed and work some more. When I can barely stay awake, I close the laptop and fool around with Google Reader and TaDaList on the iPhone. Someone tell me this is healthy. I'm currently longing for the days of Bell telephones, and thinking seriously about downshifting to a Moleskine and a Hipster PDA. Maybe just a desktop would work. » POSTED IN:
