Capture with Jott
Stew | Mar 20 2007
I am in no way affiliated with this service, but thought I'd post about it in case it can be of use to anyone. I recently discovered Jott, a voice-to-text web-based transcription program. I had been looking for a capture device to use in my car for some time. My cell phone has a voice recorder, which I have used with my Bluetooth headset, but I'd always forget to review my recordings. Enter Jott. I call Jott on my cell phone, leave a message at the beep, and it's magically sent to my gmail account as a text email. The emails then get processed when I'm back online. The transcription sometimes confuses a few words for others, but it's definitely not so severe as to limit the message's meaning. I've even used this to transcribe memos and letters for my assistant. Being away from my desk quite a bit, and often finding it inconvenient to reach into my pocket for my hPDA, this is a great solution for on-the-run thinking. 8 Comments

Seconded on all counts. The transcriptions aren't always exactly perfect (especially with names), but it helps if you speak slowly. But this service is awesome for 'ubiquitous capture.' Set it to a speed dial on your cell and capture is 10 seconds away. A few minutes after you call, you'll get an email with whatever you said in the subject, prepended by a [Jott] tag. It's a no-brainer to have Gmail or mail.app filter based on that. And it would only take a bit of work to get those filters automatically piping input to iCal, or even better, one of the web calendars that speaks "English" like Gcal or 30 boxes. » POSTED IN:
