Handling notes and Project Reference materials
cutter | Dec 29 2005
Hi, Looking for recommendations on how to manage short notes, lists and project reference materials using a Mac. I'm in the second week of using KGTD and Quicksilver to manage my Projects and action list, but I can see that I need a better way of keeping up with my reference materials and lists. Been looking at DevonThink, Voodoopad and just dumping things into text files using Quicksilver append. I gotta say my head's getting ready to explode trying to figure out how everything fits together and reading on the topic on various forums. Love the spontaneous ability to add things to KGTD and append to files in Quicksilver and I can't quite see that in DevonThink. Plus I am not to excited about spending a lot of time setting up in a proprietary system. I had been tracking everything on my work Windows system and using a Palm, but that had not been working too well for projects outside of work. After using KGTD, I have too say it is not working as well for work projects too, but that is the subject of another topic. 3 Comments

I'd suggest starting with textfiles. If there's something textfiles won't do for you, write it down. Once you've got a few of those, work out what /does/ those things and then consider migrating to it. That, and with Quicksilver and the right triggers set up, you can drop something into a list with nearly zero effort. For example, I've got cmd-opt-ctrl-enter set up as a trigger to append to my worklog. When I hit it, QS just pops up, I type what I wanted to log and it's done. No text editors, no context switching, no friction. The modifier's so long because I have a whole series of little hacks set up using cmd-opt-ctrl, but would otherwise be crazy. :) HTH, » POSTED IN:
