Labelers

...or not labelers? Sheeplike, I bought a Brother P-Touch labeler because The David said I had to. :) I've used it on occasion, but for the life of me, I don't understand how it's better at labeling file folders than a seven-cent (in bulk) ballpoint pen. What am I missing?

I think a labeller is...

I think a labeller is recommended for two reasons:

1. aesthetics
A labeller can look nicer than handwriting - that's certainly the case for me.

2. Reusability
It's easier to remove a label and add another one when you're reusing a file.

I was dubious about the labeller too, but I've found that I like the neatness of it, which does encourage me a little to stay organised.
