To Tab Or Not To Tab
shivalemur | Oct 31 2005
What are your thoughts on tabbed browsing? Do you find it improves your productivity? I've used a tabbed browser for a long while now. It's great for navigating through sites quickly, building queues of links, and for keeping track of multiple sites (e.g. webmail, banking, Backpack). I also find it hugely valuable when searching; much faster to filter through results. And I'm a big fan of tab sets. But I do question whether tabs let us overload ourselves with information. Tabbed browsing is another form of multi-tasking. Does having many tabs open at once mean we focus less on the content of each? I admit, my attention span isn't terribly long and I tend to skip between tabs. Does anyone here find it more effective to just use one window at a time? Are you able to focus better on the task at hand? 4 Comments

I manage several different blogs/websites, so I tend to keep the active ones open in tabs. I also keep a few resources open in tabs. I try to avoid keeping sites that I would like to check open in tabs, to avoid the temptation to click. I do keep Bloglines open in a tab, which is a combo of resources and distractions. I tend to ignore the distraction feeds until they build up. That way when I check the feed, I give it a quick scan for anything interesting in one go rather than looking at them often. I really cannot imagine not using tabs. I also use the SessionSaver extension (at work) and Saft (at home) to keep my place. On the occasion when I get to watch someone browsing who uses a non-tabbing browser, I am amazed by what I perceive to be an unproductive use of links and clicking. » POSTED IN:
