Damn you Homer

Why can't the man use definite articles? I mean, is it that hard? I'm pulling my hair out here... Oh and can you drop a few verb forms as well? The 9 or so that you do use is enough... Just venting as I wade through 100 or so lines of Homer this morning, I'm not even going to mention particles. Ugh. 7 Comments

Well, I wouldn't call it reading. But it is in Greek. I'm translating the first book of the Iliad for a class and this morning was a rough one. We'll be doing New Testament in the Fall. Acts, or a part of it at least, I believe. I love it but sometimes I feel like I want to pull my hair out. Homer doesn't put augments on half his verbs, the only articles you get are pronouns or relative pronouns so it's stare at the inscrutable ending of the noun for an hour before you figure out that it's a "genitive of the body part being grabbed" (one of my personal favorites). And then any sentence that begins: ἠδ᾽ ἔτι καὶ νῦν, you know you're in trouble. ;) » POSTED IN:
