Mac Security Question
pooks | Mar 30 2006
Not fun "grabass" but I need a quick answer and don't know where else to ask.... I'm sending my PowerBook back to Mac and it will probably end up with a new hard drive. I've backed up, etc., etc. But I just remembered what I almost forgot -- I do shop online. I don't recall whether my credit card numbers or anything like that are stored on the Mac. Where do I look to see, so I can remove them? 17 Comments

Make sure they're not stored in your keychain and be sure to delete all your cookies from Safari, Firefox, or any other browser. If you use a program like Caboodle or Yojimbo to store your credit card info, get that data off there. Finally, make sure you clear your stored passwords and things especially to places like Amazon, Paypal, eBay, and your credit card online access. I'm sure more sophisticated types (I'm looking at you, Emory!) will be along soon to add anything I've left out. The best thing to do, for ANY Apple-notebook, is to enable FileVault. You should be doing this anyway so that if your laptop gets jacked you'll not have to worry about some scumbag reading your email or looking at YOUR PORN. Don't bother with cleaning up, just encrypt your home directory. All of those items live in your home directory, and by enabling File Vault, you've just solved the problem completely. No muss, no fuss. » POSTED IN:
