Merlin on MacBreak: Intro to Quicksilver

The response to the MacBreak on Quicksilver has been enthusiastic to say the least. Thanks to everyone who's sent emails saying they now "finally 'get' Quicksilver." That's really cool to hear.

Based on lots of the messages, though, there's still lots of questions about setting up Quicksilver, loading plugins, and configuring things the way you like -- especially as seen in the video. As we've observed on the site many times, the ramp-up to full-on Quicksilver configuration can be a bitch.

I want to try and route all the questions and answers into this one thread if I can. So, there's a few links below that I [="Red"]REALLY[/] encourage you to explore thoroughly before asking questions (I swear most all the answers are out there), but if you have a question not answered, the 43 Folders hive mind and I can try to help you out. Ask away (after you've really really looked for the answer on your own, okay?).

My access over the next few days is limited, so any help from the Quicksilver studs out there is greatly appreciated!

Hi, I have just installed...

Hi, I have just installed Quicksilver and may have done something wrong as my catalog seems to be quite incomplete. The first time I installed Quicksilver I was able to pull up a file "dani1" three levels deep on the desktop by typing "dani". I thought that was cool till I realized that the results field didn't include a file "dani2" located in the same file as "dani1". I uninstalled and reinstalled Quicksilver. This time typing "dani" did not find the previously found file. I am confused. I have done a manual catalogue rescan but a lot of files still seem to be missing.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

My best guess is that the file that it was able to find was either open or a recent item (both of which categories are included in the catalog by default I believe). If you want to have a deeper cataloguing of certain folders such as the Desktop or Documents, you will have to create a new catalog entry and change its scanning depth. The easiest way is by Create a Copy. Since you mentioned Desktop, I will give instructions for Desktop.

1. In QS Prefs, go to Catalog > User > Desktop.
2. Click show info to bring out the drawer.
3. Go to the attributes tab.
4. QS will tell you that the catalog entry is a preset. Click Create Copy.
5. You should now have been moved to the Custom section of your Catalog and there should be a duplicate copy of your Desktop catalog entry.
6. Go to the Source Options tab and set the desired scanning depth. Infinite might slow your system some and clog up your searching
7. (Optional) Return to the User section of the catalog and disable Desktop. Essentially, you have replaced the preset with a custom copy so having the shallow Desktop entry would be superfluous.

You might ask, "Why not just change the scanning depth on Desktop in the User section?" That answer is easy. It's greyed out. There has been some heated discussion in the past over whether this is good or not, but the devs insist that the Create Copy method is the best to be nice to systems by default.
