I need a text editor

I just moved back to Mac from administering Windows systems for years. Last time I had my beloved Mac was MacOS 8.5, so things have changed a bit since then.

I work with text every day doing coding. When I was on Windows, I fell in love with Textpad. Extremely powerful, easy to use. Just works exactly the way I want.

Now I'm on Mac again, and every single text editor I've tried has some deficiency in design that just irks me. I've now tried Textmate, SubEthaEdit, Simpletext, Textedit, and Textwrangler. I was particularly disappointed by TW, being a BBEdit product, which was always very good. For example, if I bring up the Find dialog box, I lose access to copying any other text from the main window. WHY?????

I even got Textpad working via Crossover, but its got wierd bugs that come from being emulated via Wine, plus its not fully integrated.

I just want a text editor that does what Textpad does. I just need something that works logically and powerfully, and doesn't have usage quirks that only persist because of some snarky Mac programmer who thinks his special way of handling a common find/replace function is the best in the world.

Anyone have some recommendations?

Feel your pain. Run through...

Feel your pain. Run through a number of text editors myself. Unfamiliar with TextPad. What did you like about it? (That might help us suggest alternatives.)

I use Tex-Edit. And TextEdit. And Smultron. And some of the ones you mentioned... I use different text editors for different jobs. I wish I had a decent one-size-fits-all or even a one-size-fits-most, but I haven't found one yet.
