Free (or at least way cheaper) DEVONThink alternative?

I rather like the idea of having a program to manage all my digital crap, since I suck at doing it myself. DEVONThink looks nice, but I just don't have that kind of money. I've been using Journler 2.0, but it's a bit clunky, particularly in how it does entries with tables. Yeek. Any recomendations? 19 Comments

Casey, From what I've read it...Submitted by solidsnot on August 23, 2006 - 8:57am.
Casey, From what I've read it depends on how much research you're going to be doing. I've seen DTP used in basically two different ways: 1) Multiple databases. Using your example of Religious Studies if you did an internet search using DEVONagent and dumped the results into DTP and then dumped whatever scholarly papers you have found or planning on using into one "Religious Studies" database. If you then wanted to research a different topic, say John Deere back-hoes, then you would open a new database for that research. The benefits of this is that the AI of DTP is better at searching through your stuff and finding related documents. Also, the database will be smaller and thus result in quicker searches. 2) The other way I've heard of people using it to just dump anything and everything in there. The benefits of this system seem to be using the AI to find documents that in some way relate to each other but aren't under the same topic. I understand that to do this you cannot just dump everything into DTP but need to have a semi-intelligent system of filing your documents that aids the AI in finding related documents. The database will also be larger and slower. I guess this isn't really helping, so take your pick. ;) » POSTED IN:
