Help Me Merlin-Wan Kenobi, You're My Only Hope (Entourage vs. iCal/Mail/Address Book)

Merlin, I feel you when I say that I've tried and tried to like using Apple's trio of productivity apps. But I cannot kick the Entourage habit. I like my full contact history, the links between messages, the Palm Sync, and launching one app instead of three.

You've mentioned some of those same things on 43f, and I was wondering how you made it to using the triumvirate without feeling all weird. I've tried to use Apple's offerings in the past and it all just felt clunky.

Goodbye Entourage

Macfixer:

I used Entourage for years and liked it. And, when the new Project Center feature was introduced, I got all excited about it (though I'm not really sure what benefit I ever derived from it...) But, then one day Entourage be-gan to s-l-o-w d-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-w-n-n. My database was at about 2Gb and it was painful. Running the utilities didn't help.

At about the same time, Apple introduced Spotlight. And, that changed everything for me. Now, working in Mail with Spotlight is so cool!

The other driver for me was kGTD. I adopted it and iCal became my friend. Now, I use kGTD to do all my collection and processing to get to the next actions. I sync those with iCal and do my scheduling in iCal. It's been flawless.

And, when it comes to syncing with Palm devices, I found that using MissingSync was invaluable. The quality of that product is inspiring.

Entourage works really well if you have only one Mac, or if you have to work with others using an Exchange server. If not, I think the benefits of using the Mail/iCal/AddressBook are there for most users.

Goodbye Entourage, I say.
