Anti-Distraction-Vana for Windows
sol2k | Feb 23 2006
Hi, fellow Windows-slaves! On the tail of this post (http://www.43folders.com/2006/02/23/against-distraction/), I put a comment asking for tools, tips and thoughts on avoiding/killing/reducing distraction on a Windows desktop. What are some tips, tools, thoughts, hacks, jokes you use to reduce your distraction when using Windows as the OS ? *Auto-hide your taskbar. Not only creates more desktop real-estate, it also hides the 3 Firefox buttons that are shown on mine right now. *Any tool out there to emulate Mac's Command+H? Would love to have something like that in Windows. There are some tools that will send windows to the tray, but I am not sure that is something anyone would like (1 more icon in the tray??? geez...) *Has anyone ever tried this thing called Deskloops (http://www.xilokit.com/deskloops/) (no affiliation) ? I tried it but it didn?t feel comfortable for me. Very cool, tho. Any other comments ? *Lifehacker.com just announced TimeSnapper a couple of days ago (http://www.lifehacker.com/software/time-tracker/download-of-the-day-timesnapper-156042.php). It takes screenshots of the desktop at regular intervals. I use it for my guilt trip at the end of the day, to make myself painfully aware of how much I was web surfing instead of actually working. Masochistic ? Perhaps? but it?s working for me. C'mon, people! Ante up ! Sol2k 7 Comments

some windows tipsSubmitted by secretGeek on March 3, 2006 - 10:17pm.
that deskloops thing looks amazing! not particularly useful... but very involved. following someone else's advice i've got a few productivity tips in windows: on your work computer: use the 'windows scheduler' (in control panel on windows xp) to launch your timesheet entry application every day at the same time. use 'slickrun' the command line tool for launching apps. if you have MSN messenger (or derivative) disable 'notify me about people changing status' if you use outlook, setup rules that move common distracting emails (for example, from 'problem colleagues') out of the inbox, so that you don't get notified about them. have a piece of paper -- REAL actual paper -- beside you that lists your current tasks, with next steps highlighted. (i have a particular template for this). eat small portions of healthy low gi food throughout the day, so your energy levels are constant (and high :D ) rather than having a big sugary lunch (which leads to moodiness  and after noon tiredness :( ) even if you are left handed (like me) use your mouse in the right hand. i have this firm belief that it leads to more productive work. (and hey, it frees up your left hand for writing notes... if you're left handed) » POSTED IN:
