Ultimate LoFi... Keeping it all in your head?
sgen | Dec 28 2006
OK so KIAIYH is heresy around here but I'm thinking about mnemonic techniques like memory champions use to memorise 1000 digit sequences and card players use to track multiple shuffled decks. I'm happily MedFi at home and at work (a single plain old text file on computer -- although admittedly my text editor thinks its a programming language and folds, colours and formats it accordingly) but need something for when I'm out and about, mainly for capture. I was thinking about maybe constructing a GTD "memory palace" in my head and using mnemonics to track stuff until I'm back at the computer. It would be a bit of effort to set up but it would be lightweight, hands-free and waterproof (though not necessarily alcohol-proof). Just an idea. 12 Comments

Imaginary White PlateSubmitted by sgen on December 31, 2006 - 12:03pm.
OK, I've given this a brief minimalist trial. Not a memory palace, not even a memory hovel. Just an imaginary white plate. I drove to visit my brother yesterday so I tried to get an unusually early night the night before. This left me lying in a dark room with too many thoughts running through my head like... "I should pick up a bottle of wine on the way" "and check my tyre pressure" "and take my spare wireless router up in case I can't get his working like he wants me to" My mind then span off into mentally rehearsing an argument that I never quite seem to get around to having in real life. This sort of thing can keep me awake all night so I decide something needs fixing here. Finally, a book I should maybe lend to my boss ends up soaking on the side of the plate. The next morning? Its all there -- "on my plate" as it were -- it all gets dealt with or entered into my system, and my plate gets an imaginary wipe before being put away. It seemed to work quite well overnight, so I trialled it again by not writing anything down whilst at my brother's. So, right now, my plate has a light sprinkling of flour on it. Someone has dipped their finger in milk and drawn a "3" in the flour. There's also a small pile of sawdust on the plate and a little diving board from which Spongebob Squarepants is preparing to take a dive. I'm gonna post this, then I'm gonna deal with the stuff on my plate, then I'm gonna get drunk for new year and maybe find out how alcohol-proof this plate is. Cheers. » POSTED IN:
