Ultimate LoFi... Keeping it all in your head?
sgen | Dec 28 2006
OK so KIAIYH is heresy around here but I'm thinking about mnemonic techniques like memory champions use to memorise 1000 digit sequences and card players use to track multiple shuffled decks. I'm happily MedFi at home and at work (a single plain old text file on computer -- although admittedly my text editor thinks its a programming language and folds, colours and formats it accordingly) but need something for when I'm out and about, mainly for capture. I was thinking about maybe constructing a GTD "memory palace" in my head and using mnemonics to track stuff until I'm back at the computer. It would be a bit of effort to set up but it would be lightweight, hands-free and waterproof (though not necessarily alcohol-proof). Just an idea. 12 Comments

All points taken but, just...Submitted by sgen on December 29, 2006 - 7:00pm.
All points taken but, just to clarify, I'm not suggesting running a full system in my head! I run one in a text editor, thanks. Its more like... If I'm taking a swim before work and I have a good idea in the pool I'd like somewhere to "put" that idea safely (ie a trusted system) instead of having to "hold" it in my head until I get to the computer, or even until I get out of the pool and can put it onto a damp index card. I'm speculating than mnemonic techniques might get this done. The same methods -- but not on anything like the same scale -- as "memory champions" use. I don't want to memorise 1000 random numbers or 4 decks of cards. I don't even want to memorise my projects list, next actions list or shopping list. I just want to memorise the 2 or 3 things I might have jotted down somewhere if I hadn't been swimming, bathing, driving, wearing gloves, or lying down in a dark room -- and to know I can get them back and put them into my system as soon as I'm at the computer. Anyway, enough speculation. I'll either try it and report back, or I won't. » POSTED IN:
