Index Card Storage?
mdl | Jul 27 2006
Has anyone found a good, relatively cheap index card file? I use the little plastic boxes but would ideally like to get something with more ample room for my growing index card reference collection. I've hung around on ebay for ages, looking for old library card catalogues. But these get pretty expensive, and many of them are for pick-up only. They can also be pretty dingy. I would love a simple, new index card file (especially one made of wood). The ideal would be a single drawer unit with the possibility of buying additional units. Any ideas? Maybe I'm not looking in the right places... 13 Comments

You want really cheap (in every sense of the word)? I store my "done" index cards in a brown paper lunch sack. The bottom dimensions are almost exactly 3x5: cards fit perfectly. I've rolled down the top so that it stays open and keeps its shape nicely. I have one on my desk with fresh, unused cards. I have another one next to my inbox were I can put completed task cards. Now, I don't need to reference my cards (at least not regularly. I might pull out a pile at review time, but it is not like I'm actually trying to pull out a particular item), so this actually works great. Once I fill the bag, I can tape it shut and start another one. Practically limitless supply and convenience without any significant cost. Probably won't work for you, but you never know. » POSTED IN:
