Prodnography: $10 Alternatives to Levenger Pocket Briefcase and/or Rope Case
Jamie Phelps | May 14 2006
There was no way in hell I could afford a $34 case for my index cards. So, I was so stoked today when I was at Target and found a bright green index card holder that looks almost exactly like a Pocket Briefcase. It was only $10. So, I did what any self-respecting geek would do. I took the thing out of its case and moved my index cards in to see how they would fit. It came with 20 cards that were printed with flowers on one side. But, after getting home, I have found it can hold up to 50 cards plus five dividers. It has one main compartment, a front and back pocket, and a front capture area. Sorry, but I don't have the brand name because I threw the package out and its not branded on (to my joy). Then, on the way home from Target, I stopped to get some G2 refills at Staples. They didn't have the 05 refills, but I also wanted to look for the business card holder that others have posted about on here. I ended up getting the single column version since it was only $3 or so and I don't need the bigger version taking up desk space. Then I saw another Pocket Briefcase-esque product. It is made by a company called Buxton. (They had some other cool stuff from the same company there, too.) I got it to hold 30 cards. It was a tight fit, but not unusably so. It has two compartments and a capture area. It is also $10. And what would such a report be without pictures? I didn't have my good camera with me, so the Buxton is taken with my T637. I took the others when I got home and completely moved in. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jxpx777/sets/72057594135135895/ 17 Comments

Hey Paul! Well, I did a...Submitted by a11en on June 21, 2006 - 10:57pm.
Hey Paul! Well, I did a very bad thing. I took a trip to Levenger's... But, at least my GF now sees why I love their stuff. [There were a few "Oh, that's cool." or "I really like that!" 's every once in a while.] I came away with a Folio that I think they're phasing out in the same amazing leather as my Ballistic's... and I love it. Beautiful craftsmanship. Yummy leather. [I think they're phasing it out 'cause it's cheaper than all the rest :D - but, well, it was the one I could afford, right before an important conference- so I got it.] A joy to use. I also picked up a packet of their 3x5's and they're excellent. They take FP ink very nicely as well. I'll probably continue to purchase at least the ruled versions. I'm tempted to have some made with my contact info for when I meet various business guys, but would likely have to change everything in a year or so. So, we'll see. I did jump into the DIYPlanner templates a bit, and I've so far enjoyed the Financial record template, the Weekly Tracker template (for keeping track of my time spent on my very critical project tasks) and the 2-year calendar reference. I'll have to spend a bit more time looking at the other options before I adopt them... Oh yeah, and the flow-chart for the GTD system. [Worth the free download of the DIYPlanner right there.] So, for me, my iCal printed Calendar (2 weeks, front/back) goes on the writing surface, my kGTD printed lists go in the first pocket behind the writing surface, my blanks go mid-BSPBC, and any notes/written on 3x5's go in the last pocket. There's one little catch- right now I need a way to archive my critical notes from the 3x5's. I think eventually it'll be scanning them in and putting meta-tags with Quicksilver's tagging option onto them for better searching in spotlight. But, I haven't gotten that far yet. ;) I generally try and utilize the notes or write them somewhere else with a bit more importance than the 3x5 if they're real reference material. The "BSPBC" has been absolutely fantastic for me so far... really bridged the gap between my kGTD world and the non-computer world. As well, it's super-easy to take quick notes, or add to an inbox by hand (using my fantastic fountain-pen of course ;) he he...). I get some strange looks at times, but I think they raspec' my lo-fi tools when they see them in action. ;) Let us know how the Pocket Briefcase works out for ya and how you implement it! [For me, the lo-fi to hi-fi is the difficult step...] » POSTED IN:
