4x6

Success! I am now happily printing my lists onto index cards. Now, my hipster experiment can begin.

I'm happily married to kGTD, which is not to say that we don't have our little spats. While kGTD is my homebase for action planning, I've been taking my task lists on the road using a Windows mobile Missing Sync, which works well.

I'm using uncoated, blank, white 4"x6" cards and a HP Photosmart 320 photo printer. Works great. Even better with the ink set to low volume.

This trip started out trying to use 3x5 cards, but I couldn't get them to work with the printers I have. But, its fine using 4x6 cards because they fit in the back pocket of my 501 jeans and my suit jacket breast pocket easily. And, they give you more surface on which to write. But, I'll have to supersize my moleskine pocket cahier to a 5x8.

So, for all you out there who are are getting frustrated trying to print on 3x5, try and big up to 4x6 index cards.

I'm one of those chronic GTD system changer-uppers, so I'm always looking for a reason to swap out a gadget or try some new notebook or index card solution. In fact, the times I've gone completely paper, I loved it, but I always give in to the gadget lust. Anybody have a cure for this?

I used to be like this as well. lusting day after day for the next techno gadget that would not only tell me whatever I wanted to know just by me thinking about it but it would also cook me breakfast every morning. Then one day as I pondered buying a Palm I ordered a Levenger Pocket Briefcase and bought a bunch of index cards and for some reason I haven't even thought about a Palm since. My wife even suggested I go get one as she witnessed me flipping through my cards the other day and instead of me running immediately to the store as I would have before the index cards, I found myself looking at her as if she was crazy and laughed at her suggestion.

I think the breakthrough was when I realized that all I would be using my Palm as would be a fancy electronic to-do list that could check email. I realized that I like carrying around my index cards because I have something to jot notes down on but also it does everything that a Palm was supposed to do for me. Once I found something that I truly liked then I settled in and the techno lust went away.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
