Filing Records
pooks | Feb 10 2006
Beyond your General files, what are your preferred ways to file/keep up with bills, receipts, etc.? I'm trying to think of the simplest way, and am not sure whether to do it by month, by type of bill (cell phone, electricity, etc.) or ... ? What works best for you? 9 Comments

Gena, that makes sense to me. I always spend this time of year (oh, tell the truth Pooks -- April 14th!) scraping together receipts from every corner of the house and car and desk and anywhere they may have gotten stuck, then typing them into an excel sheet and eventually coming up with a total. Last year I started a filing system that has been helpful -- I have a file box with pockets (not files -- I don't want those little slips of paper escaping) and have labeled them from 2000-2006. I have it out and available and every time I come up with a receipt for anything tax deductible, I stick it in the right year. (Yes, as I've been GTD-ing my office and life, I have even come up with reciepts from the 80s!) So I'll have to do my usual excel sheet/total thing in the next few weeks. The good news is, I've already gathered it, so the entire ordeal doesn't seem so daunting, so I won't put it off until the 14th. But I have a growing file for 2006 and I'm thinking of inputting it all into Quicken or something and keep up with it all year so that I can be one of those people who looks puzzled at tax time and says, "What's hard about it? I just print out my Quicken records and it's all done...." No, probably not. But it's worth a try? » POSTED IN:
