Hey folks, Whilst waving some friends off to sea earlier, I did some calculations. 600 messages in an 8 hour work day is 8 messages every 10 minutes. Or, 1.25 messages a minute. It's just not going to work is it? I'm not knocking Merlins system here. I'm just stunned and amazed that ANYTHING gets done with this volume of noise flying around. I am very lucky, in that my job results in very very few mails. I can even go some days without receiving any work related mail at all. I simply cannot imagine the amount of stress 600 mails would bring me. I wouldn't be so much "scrolling-in-tears" as "walking-out-the-door".... Please excuse this utterly geeky calculator hugging first post - I swear, I don't wear a pocket protector..... 10 Comments

That volume of email is shocking to me as well. (I'm sure Tim Ferriss wouldn't last long at Google!) The analysis is also very helpful for really thinking about email in a clear way. But I would make some qualifications to the 500-600 emails a day thing. Much of that is mailing list stuff. Knowledge sharing and building. So, most of that stuff can just be archived after a very very cursory once over. Couple that with keyword filtering (If I'm interested in XML topics, for instance, I might add a keyword filter [labels in Google terms] so that those boil up to the top.) and then you don't have to deal with every single message that comes in. Just archive. Then, when you need to mine that knowledge base, search to the rescue. So, if that cuts down the email load by half (maybe more?) then I think the numbers work out to where you don't have to be Johnny 5 to get to Inbox Zero. » POSTED IN:
