Dealing w/ Burnout

I work in the non-profit world, doing a job that used to be exciting, rewarding, and infinitely more satisfying then being a slave to the corporate world. But it seems that over the last year I have been fighting some feelings that I think are burnout.
It is getting harder and harder to put in the effort I used to and am coming increasingly detached. Productivity is suffering as a result.

I use GTD, I have my lists, I am organized. I know exactly what needs to be done, Its just getting harder and harder to execute.

I have a major promotion to Executive Director level coming in a few months and I want to use my time before it happens to get it all together and find that spark again that I had a couple years ago. Does anyone have any resources/advice? Books ideas? Life hacks? etc?

Thanks!

Good to know its also...

Good to know its also hard for people to stay passionate about their career, even when it is largely altrustic!

I think taking some time off is a good way to help gain some perspective. If you work in politics or policy, avoid the world for a couple of days. Don't watch the news. Don't read the paper.

I love my job, but I go through my seasons of apathy. I feel like I'm faking it for a few weeks and then perk up. Usually this perk-up comes from a *really* good 2day vacation contemplating what I'm up to and where I'm going. Optimism and something to work for usually motivate me quite a bit and get me interested in my job again.

The trick is to find a reason to care. Not just about the big picture stuff but even the things on your action list. If I don't feel like I care about the outcome, how can I possibly be doing my best? Sometimes this means I have to hand a project to someone else just to get into something I'm more interested in working on.

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »

Scared Shitless

Merlin’s scared. You’re scared. Everybody is scared.

This is the video of Merlin’s keynote at Webstock 2011. The one where he cried. You should watch it. »
