Cool article about metaphors for new information tools

Here's a very interesting article and a commentary on the article, both about metaphors and new ways of thinking about information tools:

summary/commentary by Jean Graef of the Montague Institute:

Article: "Interface Lift" by Amy Wohl, in IEEE Spectrum (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers):

These seem to address (or at least touch on) what many of us would like to do (organize all the personal information in our lives so it's accessible and doesn't drive us crazY).

One of the metaphors mentioned is "personal knowledge management programs." They point out an interesting looking new program called EverNote (no Mac version yet it looks like, but one is supposedly on the way).
The library metaphor is interesting and relevant too. Flickr & Delicious also get mentioned.

Evernote is awesome.

  1. Find cool/useful information on web.
  2. Select text and/or graphics to capture.
  3. Right-click and "Add to Evernote". (Or click toolbar button.)
  4. If desired, you can go into Evernote at the end of day (or whenever you have two minutes) and add your own categories to the notes. This gives you the ability to filter/view your notes by category.
  5. Notes are exportable and printable.
  6. It's free! :)

I use it for capturing "reference" or "someday/maybe" information from the web. But you could also just use it for a place to keep those little snippets of potentially useful information that don't belong to a particular project and so defy your efforts to store them usefully.
