Lowering Upload/Download
jcisco | Mar 9 2007
In New Zealand, they do broadband a bit differently than back home in the states. With our plan, they really focus on your upload/download usage. I am limited to 5GB upload/download a month. Originally, I didn't think this would be a problem -- I was wrong. I'm amazing at the amount of data that is passed through when I surf. Anyone have any tips to keep this low? Other than surfing less of course.. Skype definitely has something to do with it... What about RSS readers? -- is that doing some damage? Thanks, Jonathan Cisco 5 Comments

RSS is definitely having an effect on that. Increase the time between updates. I went through my subscriptions and changed the update frequency based on the site. For instance, 43folders.com I only have update once per day, but tuaw.com and lifehacker.com I have update every thirty minutes. I am actually to the point where I don't update manually. Skype is of course eating a lot of your bandwidth. Any VoIP app will. The only thing I can think of besides the RSS thing is to turn off images and enable an ad blocker (like in Saft or OmniWeb). This will save bandwidth in downloading those images. I think your best bet though is to turn off Skype and adjust your RSS update settings. » POSTED IN:
