Keratin lifehack: growing a beard

The first time I grew a beard was to see how I'd look. Subsequent beards were fraught with meaning. They were hair-based timers and totems of resolve. I, at various times, resolved not to shave until I submitted the thesis, hooked up with a new girlfriend, went a month without a beer, etc.. There was always the playoff beard. I had a friend in college who grew two beards a year (he would shave before going home at Christmas), and I finally decided to give it a try one summer. Only after I shaved it off (I had a beard trimmer accident) did my friends tell me they liked the way it looked. So I gave it another try... as soon as I had a job that didn't put me in front of customers all the time. I've been wearing a beard since 1993.
