Tracking business mileage
Jamie Phelps | May 17 2006
Does anyone have tips on tracking automobile mileage for business deduction? I have of course thought of keeping a notepad in the car as a log, but I forget to write trips down and since I have my computer with me pretty much all the time, I sometimes end up doing business work when I didn't expect to and therefore didn't plan to write it down? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. 6 Comments

Depending on your driving habits,...Submitted by wood.tang on May 18, 2006 - 10:09am.
Depending on your driving habits, you may be able to cut down the number of times you need to record your mileage. An accountant once suggested to me that if you make work-related trips far more often than personal, only record the mileage when you take a personal trip. Then just subtract that from your weekly/monthly/quarterly totals. Obviously this could work in reverse too. Also, if you're self-employed, you can usually get away with documenting just a portion of the year's mileage for deductions, say a 3 months, for proof of a percentage estimate of how much you use your car for work. » POSTED IN:
