quitting smoking: replacement stimulant
duus | Jun 5 2006
Hello. Any GTD smoking quitters out there? I'm quitting, and, well, I'm used to the constant stimulant. Of course, I'm still drinking coffee (and the constant imbibing of stimulants is bad for you and I exercise and that helps your energy more in the long run etc etc). Is coffee the only replacement stimulant for the cigarettes? It's really cutting into my productivity, and it will be very hard to maintain quitting if I'm at a permanently lower tier of work effort & focus. thanks! 10 Comments

How I quit smokingSubmitted by ozhuner on June 6, 2006 - 8:35am.
I just wanted to share my story on how I quit by reducing smoking first, before quitting on the patch. I had tried to quit about three times and was not very successful until I went to see my doctor for a prescription for a patch (at the time you needed a prescription). He asked me how much I was smoking and I told him about half a pack a day. He told me to not bother trying to quit and did not give me a prescription. Instead, his advice was to cut down and come back to see him when I was at 4 smokes a day. After about 2-3 months, I had managed to reduce my habit to only 4 smokes and my doctor gave me a prescription for the level 2 patch (sorry I cant remember brand and dose). I haven't smoked since, and that was 8 years ago. The key was reducing my addiction to nicotine before going on the patch. At that lower level, the patch let my body deal with the physiological addiction to the drug, and allowed me (my mind) to deal with the behavioral addiction to the habit. » POSTED IN:
