Looking for ideas/suggestions for DVD storing
Rogue Six | Jan 17 2006
After reading the post about building a Memory Palace, it got me thinking about how I need to pare down what I have myself and free up some living space. One of the snags I've hit is what to do with my DVDs...I'm planning on storing my CDs in binders, but I'm wondering about my DVDs. Should I just do the same thing, or can anyone give me some new ideas? How do you store your DVDs to save on space? In other words -- Help! 6 Comments

http://kvet.ch/articles/2005/11/27/how-i-manage-my-media This is what I do, those trunks show up on dealtime/dealmac quite often in varying sizes. What I did was encode some movies I want around but don't need the originals of, fit three of those on one DVD, indexed and filed via my system, then put the originals in the basement. I have something like 300 movies in plastic bins, which are indexed in an application I got called Books (which does DVDs too), 200 DVD's in the livingroom that are slowly being pared down as I move them into storage if I don't need them immeadiatly available. I store a lot of media on-line via the fileserver in the house but am limited by storage space, I can't afford a SAN so I'm buying fixed disks and have around 500-700GB of media online, and the rest on DVDs. My bigger problem is vinyl records. I am VERY slowly encoding these to Apple Lossless and MP3 but that is a slow process, and to be honest I prefer the sound of the music on vinyl anyway so I'm not super motivated. But they're fragile, and hard to safely keep and use at the same time. I don't like books for optical media, though I suppose it'd be fine if you had some sort of master index you could browse or consult. I just like the trunk because it looks nice and holds a full metric crapload of media. I secretly wish I had waited and noticed that the 700 disc version goes on sale too, but I'll probably get another 500 disc version soon. What I like about my system is that I can consult the index from the monitor in the livingroom -- I didn't want to have to thumb through something or whatever, and I'll always have some sort of home media do-dad in the livingroom that can browse a filesystem, so I don't think my way is in danger of being a trap anytime soon. (Note: I've also switched from using files to using directories, that way XBMC can still see them and I don't have a bunch of fake files laying around that show up in searches on my computers. YMMV.) I am eagerly awaiting someone to swoop in with a better way that wouldn't horrify me to move to. » POSTED IN:
