Two more hours in the day?
experimental | Feb 16 2006
I have a problem: six months ago, I gave up caffeine. Since then, my body has insisted on having eight hours sleep a night instead of five or six. The change in my health is enough that I'm not going back, but I really miss those hours. Specifically, between ten and midnight I used to get a lot of reading and writing done, but nowadays by ten I can barely keep my eyes open. I've tried quite a few ways of cutting back my time expenditures, and I do seem to have gained some time back, but it's fifteen minutes here and ten minutes there. I can't seem to get back the time I really want-- a couple of hours when the house is quiet and still, and I'm feeling peaceful, reflective and productive. Has anybody been there and hacked that? 13 Comments

I deal with this on a daily basis as I get up fairly early (6am) to go run. After school I get to deal with the kids and the house is a little to chaotic to even attempt homework so I can't really do anything until after 8pm. What I have found is that I drink coffee only in the morning and then sometime around mid-day I hit a sleepy rut but instead of fighting it I let it overtake me and after about 20 minutes of dozing off or just sitting with my eyes closed this sleep attack passes and I'm invigorated to continue on with my day. I've found that if I go and go and go the whole entire day I'll pass out after dinner and accomplish nothing. This may not happen to you but for me it is my routine and my body is pretty much used to it at this point. There are some times, especially after a particularly long or hard run, that I'm just too pooped to do anything but I accept that and know that I have to put in double time the next day. » POSTED IN:
