How do you motivate yourself?

How do you motivate yourself even to get to the stage of motivating yourself TO motivate yourself?

I procrastinate a lot at work and end up doing a day's worth in the last couple of hours..

Any advice?

I often find that my lack of motivation is just a plain lack of interest. For instance, I have a project that I agreed to and will finish, but it just simply doesn't interest me. I underbid the contract so I'm not getting paid enough. (Stupid move on my part to be sure.) The client is being difficult with communication. It's just all around an entirely uninteresting and somewhat off-putting situation. So, you might do a gut check to see if you're really interested in what you need to do or if it just has to be done.

I recently listened to Tim Ferriss SXSW talk on the 4-hour workweek. In thinking about it, I was really panicked by the thought of not having a whole bunch of crap to do. I don't mean not having anything to do, but not having crap tasks. Not checking email "like a rat pushing a lever to get a cocaine pellet." Not being a Twitter monkey (no offense to all my Twitter peeps). Not surfing the web for no discernible reason. Not playing with some new app I downloaded. Now, that's not to say I don't enjoy a lot of the stuff I just listed. It's to say that if I ruthlessly applied the 80/20 rule that TF talks about, I would be done with all the work that I need to get done really pretty damn fast, and then I would be alone with myself and have to really decide what it is I want to do. And that, my friends, is a terrifying thought on a lot of levels.

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »

Scared Shitless

Merlin’s scared. You’re scared. Everybody is scared.

This is the video of Merlin’s keynote at Webstock 2011. The one where he cried. You should watch it. »
