Collecting ideas whilst walking

I walk to and from work everyday, its about a 40 minute journey. Especially on the way home, I will be thinking about one or more problems/projects at work, and at the moment this doesn't get collected.

I can't stop to write things down as I'd never get home, I'm thinking continuously. I struggle to remember it all to write down when I get there. Currently my system is to assume that I will remember it all again at another point hopefully in the near future.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

I thought about a little dictating machine but I'm walking through the city centre and I don't want to look stupid.

I commute on foot too. I just keep a single index card and a small pen in one of my jacket pockets. Even with my dire handwriting, I find I can jot things down without breaking my stride. After all, it's not for essays; it's just the proverbial knot in the handkerchief until I get to a processing station at home or work.

Mind you, I used to use a phone with voice memo recording, and that worked well too. Talking into a phone also looks less "mad scientist" than scribbling furiously on a mangled piece of card while striding along. I just found that the retrieval time was much, much shorter with a scrawled note than a voice memo.

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
