Waiting for -- what level list?

Dear All,

I was thinking about "waiting for" items. Is that a "project level" or a "NA level" list? The problem occurred to me when processing emails I send -- I am waiting for an answer, which could come in 30 seconds, if the partner is on-line, and could come in two days or a week, if they are on holiday. Now, in the first case, it is enough to jot an item to the waiting for section of my NA lists, while in the latter, it is rather well placed among a list in projects. Or, for that matter, it could go to my diary. What do you think? (And, of course, I mean that I don't know when the answer would come.

I use email for my...

I use email for my tickler file so this is right in my wheelhouse. Pardon the hubris if you detect any.

When I send an email that I know I need a response on, I put a due date and the magic @incubate keyword. Then, it shows up in my smart mailbox when it comes back around. If I have already received the response, great! If not, this is my cue to follow-up with the person to see what the deal is.

If you are using a paper tickler, I would print the email out after sending it and put it in a tickler folder for the day I need to ping the person. This gives a good reference of what you're following up on rather than a note that says "Follow up on email with Foo." {Uhm, ok, what was that regarding???}

A note and caveat about this approach: Don't tickle yourself on the day you must hear back from the person. Give a couple days' flex. You certainly don't want to open your tickler file and see this thing that if it doesn't happen today is going to destroy your world. That's stress you don't need and it creates a crisis for the other person that he or she certainly doesn't need.
