How Granular is a Next Action?
Richard Anderson | Feb 12 2007
One thing I'm still trying to wrap my brain around viz-a-viz GTD is how granular a next action is, in terms of a project. Say, for example, I have a paper to write for an English class (which I do). I figure my NAs are: 1. Skim book for passage to analyze It's 5, 6, and 7 that have me curious as to whether those are really NAs, or if they can be made more granular and subdivided. There's subtasks to the actual writing, I suppose, but do I really need "Write thesis," "Write supporting argument 1," etc.? 9 Comments

I've found that it's hard...Submitted by tammycravit on February 13, 2007 - 12:27pm.
I've found that it's hard sometimes to remember to make my NAs small enough that they really are Next Actions, rather than being mini-projects in disguise. That's why I start all my Next Actions with verbs - for some reason, doing so helps me to keep the size of my NAs to something that's really the next physical, tangible action. I also do mini-mindmaps when I find these "stealth projects" sneaking onto my list, because usually what that means for me is that I'm not really clear about what the next action really is. Next Actions that aren't sufficiently granular are usually my cue to clarify the status of project and do some more thinking about what comes next. -- Tammy » POSTED IN:
