Higher Level Open Loops

Folks

Thanks to Merlin's Podcasts, I've finally realized why I've been procastinating all over the place for the last few months.

The runway is sorted. The process works pretty well down there. Somewhere between there and 40,000 feet it all goes wrong.

It doesn't help that the company I work for got acquired this year. I know what job I'm going to be doing, but there's a lot of paperwork to be done before it happens. But the change of role brings lots of 10, 20 and 30,000 feet questions up.

I don't even know what the questions are, let alone the answers.

Does anyone have any good triggers for questions to ask, and thought processes, at the higher levels?

I also have issues with...

I also have issues with setting goals at the higher levels. But realting to a quote from the GTD "we live at all levels" I started thinking. In each day we do a bunch of stuff and using the GTD basics we start to write down what we think we have to do. What I do then is to look through the items in my calender and in my GTD system and try to raise my point of view. So say I have booked my night for doing some workout I can ask myself why? To feel good, to get fit etc and from that I can set some bigger goals like run 10k under 60 minutes, be able to lift some weight. And from that I look up further and think about it as a concept as try to see my self in a couple of years time in my workout and what I want to have from it. Now doing this thing on some of my things to do I realize that they are not getting me anywhere and gives me a reason to quit. Like some magazine subscriptions I was supposed to pay to renew I realized that they really didn't provide me with anything so I canceled the subscriptions instead.

Actually this is a good workout and maybe one day it will get me so far to have actually set a 50000ft plan but for the moment I am just touching the 20000ft mark :-)

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »

Scared Shitless

Merlin’s scared. You’re scared. Everybody is scared.

This is the video of Merlin’s keynote at Webstock 2011. The one where he cried. You should watch it. »
