Higher Level Open Loops

Folks

Thanks to Merlin's Podcasts, I've finally realized why I've been procastinating all over the place for the last few months.

The runway is sorted. The process works pretty well down there. Somewhere between there and 40,000 feet it all goes wrong.

It doesn't help that the company I work for got acquired this year. I know what job I'm going to be doing, but there's a lot of paperwork to be done before it happens. But the change of role brings lots of 10, 20 and 30,000 feet questions up.

I don't even know what the questions are, let alone the answers.

Does anyone have any good triggers for questions to ask, and thought processes, at the higher levels?

What helped me tremendously is...

What helped me tremendously is this process I got from a Tony Robbins tape, I think it's called "Taking on a Challenge", but I am not sure.

Schedule a brainstorming session for each area of focus, and then answer each of the following questions regarding that particular area:

1. What's great about this?
2. What's not perfect yet?
3. What I am willing to do to make it the way I want it?
4. What I am willing to no longer do in order to make it the way I want it?
5. What can I do to get this job done, and enjoy the process?

Other than that the single most important (and reliefing) action is of course getting clear of your 50,000 ft point. If you can't find it, then at least be clear about your 40,000 ft script. I can imagine that everything feels shallow without the 50,000 ft data item. One thing to understand: you can subscribe to a 50,000 ft thing and change it later, when you found something better. But without it? Without a 50,000 ft reason for doing anything, everything becomes mudane, IMHO.

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »

Scared Shitless

Merlin’s scared. You’re scared. Everybody is scared.

This is the video of Merlin’s keynote at Webstock 2011. The one where he cried. You should watch it. »
