Higher Level Open Loops

Folks Thanks to Merlin's Podcasts, I've finally realized why I've been procastinating all over the place for the last few months. The runway is sorted. The process works pretty well down there. Somewhere between there and 40,000 feet it all goes wrong. It doesn't help that the company I work for got acquired this year. I know what job I'm going to be doing, but there's a lot of paperwork to be done before it happens. But the change of role brings lots of 10, 20 and 30,000 feet questions up. I don't even know what the questions are, let alone the answers. Does anyone have any good triggers for questions to ask, and thought processes, at the higher levels? 13 Comments

I wouldn't claim to be an expert on this at all, and I'm sure others have better advice, but what I found most useful was to think sequencially upwards or downwards to/from 50000ft. Also, if there's lot's of confusion at the moment with one area of your life (work) have a think about the other parts - 50000ft in particular is an area where I don't think work comes into it quite so much (life purpose)! And it can all become a lot clearer - if your 5 year plan involves moving to a new area you can start looking for new opportunities etc. I think that's what these levels are intended for, they're not to predict everything that's going to happen to you, but to help you make intelligent choices when things come up. The other thing I'd say is that if there is currently confusion over what you're going to do, accept that into your system. For example, one of your Areas of focus might be "determine job roles and responsibilities" or "get to know new colleagues" or whatever. Keep it general - projects and NAs are for specifics! Good luck with it all - am currently in a turmultuous time myself, finishing up grad school and applying for jobs, so I know what it's like! » POSTED IN:
