MegaProjects- to Split or NOT to split? - kGTD, Plans, etc.rusted System: Palm Treo?
Dr. J | Dec 11 2006
Hi there- I'm gradually getting the hang of things- after fighting it for a month, I've given up and seen the light about contexts. I tried to mini-map them into mini-projects, but finally realized if I need to, just look at my Q$#TQ#ing plan! Here's the challenge: I'm using kGTD to track everything (basically just a way to manage things inside of OmniOutliner) - and have life, general work, home, etc. in here. I've got a MEGA project here- my Doctoral Thesis Revision that I URGENTLY need productivity on. I've been stalling for a year and now am ready to tackle the beast. I have roughly 8-12 Sub-projects/areas of focus inside of my thesis, each with sub-areas/etc. that may crop up as I flesh out the plan. Should I lump this into my overall life GTD/etc. outline, or keep it segregated? Plus: Clarity/view/etc. (But could also be done by hiding/collapsing everything else in OmniOutliner) I think I've answered my own question, but what do you think? Thanks for your help! 2 Comments

I think you may have...Submitted by Ironman on December 12, 2006 - 8:09am.
I think you may have answered your question, but some thoughts I had... I just got done listing out what my higher levels look like (20,000 feet and 30,000 feet). One way to think about this may be to think of the thesis as an Area of Focus (20,000 feet) instead of a Project (or Mega-Project). And each Project goes into the thesis Area of Focus. This might help with the mental image of how all this fits together, but hey I'm an imagery type, so models and such help me understand stuff. As for kGTD, separate each thesis project as a different project, but use "thesis-" as a prefix for each project, so you can see each project separately, but they are all clumped together for your Thesis Area of Focus. So, it would look like this: Thesis - Research blah blah blah Thesis - Draft Introduction I hope this makes sense, if not reply and ask questions. This is just an idea that I came up with off the top of my head, but it makes sense to me and it might work in the field under fire. Maybe someone else will chime in with their thoughts... » POSTED IN:
