Religious Backgrounds

After reading the GTD 'cult' thread, I thought I'd ask what kind of religious or philosophical backgrounds everyone comes from. It may be too sensitive a topic (just like at parties, you shouldn't talk about religion or politics), but it'd be interesting to see where people are coming from. Obviously some see a Buddhist influence in GTD, and others may see something else? Or others (like myself) come from a different background and wouldn't know the difference.

Again, I know it's a pretty big can of worms, but I think the people around here are thoughtful enough to take everything in stride. There are quite a few thinkers here.

Most of my ancestors were...

Most of my ancestors were Quakers and Mennonites, but now my family is a strange mix of Church of Christ, Jehovah's Witnesses, Southern Baptists, Catholics, and just a few Methodists for good measure. I started out in Church of Christ, converted to Mormonism with my mother at a young age, became deeply religious, attended Catholic school, became disillusioned with the LDS Church despite my best efforts, studied gnosticism and esoteric Christianity at an Interfaith Seminary, dabbled in New Age teachings and Neo-Paganism, and finally realized that religion is really kind of wonky and so settled into a sort of panentheism on days when I'm feeling the warm, connected embrace of the universe, and scientific atheism when I think I'm just fooling myself. :)

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
