Religious Backgrounds
Brad Blackman | Sep 6 2006
After reading the GTD 'cult' thread, I thought I'd ask what kind of religious or philosophical backgrounds everyone comes from. It may be too sensitive a topic (just like at parties, you shouldn't talk about religion or politics), but it'd be interesting to see where people are coming from. Obviously some see a Buddhist influence in GTD, and others may see something else? Or others (like myself) come from a different background and wouldn't know the difference. Again, I know it's a pretty big can of worms, but I think the people around here are thoughtful enough to take everything in stride. There are quite a few thinkers here. 42 Comments

Oh boy. ;) Definitely a can of worms. ;) Well, since I jumped into the cult message, I'll jump in here and bare myself a bit... ok, spiritually not physically. Don't want to gross anyone out. ;) I'm a Christian from a strange background- baptised Catholic, went to a United Church of Canada church, then to Methodist, confirmed Methodist, then spent a long time at a Baptist church... so I'm trying to cover my bases. ;) he he he... I've read quite a bit about Eastern philosophies, and understand the draw and interests in Buddhism. I personally love the teachings of ChuangTse, and see Taoism more as a philosophy than a religion. [BTW, also a very hard-core C.S. Lewis fan. :)] Oh, and did I mention I'm a scientist? [yikes!] ;) So, yes, they merge quite well... in the words of C.S. Lewis: "...The waking world is judged more real because it can thus contain the dreaming world; the dreaming world is judged less real because it cannot contain the waking one. For the same reason I am certain that in passing from the scientific points of view to the theological, I have passed from dream to waking. ..." - (snippet from "Is Theology Poetry" given to the Oxford University Socratic Club, Nov. 6th, 1944, first published in 1945 and now included in the compliation of addresses entitled "The Weight Of Glory") Cheers, everyone! » POSTED IN:
