Religious Backgrounds
Brad Blackman | Sep 6 2006
After reading the GTD 'cult' thread, I thought I'd ask what kind of religious or philosophical backgrounds everyone comes from. It may be too sensitive a topic (just like at parties, you shouldn't talk about religion or politics), but it'd be interesting to see where people are coming from. Obviously some see a Buddhist influence in GTD, and others may see something else? Or others (like myself) come from a different background and wouldn't know the difference. Again, I know it's a pretty big can of worms, but I think the people around here are thoughtful enough to take everything in stride. There are quite a few thinkers here. 42 Comments

Chrome47 said it well at his post. My story: I was raised Protestant (independent fundamental hellfire & brimstone Baptist to be exact). I went to Christian schools most of my life, but when I entered college I was confronted with others' world-views that were in direct opposition to mine. At age 19 I began to question the reasons for my faith and, unfortunately, there was no one around me that could provide satisfactory answers to the questions I had. That produced frustration which led me to drift toward atheism. However, I realized that I could no more prove that God did not exist as I could prove that He did exist. I blatantly stated that "I just could not decide" so I found myself sitting on the fence of agnosticism. Funny as it sounds, the words from a song by Rush kept going through my head. I believe the song is called "Free Will" and the lyrics state: "You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice. If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice." I figured that the only way to get any peace would be to take a hard look at the evidence for both world views (God / no god), even though I thought it would leave me only back where I started (agnosticism). I took a hard look at the evidence for atheism (macroevolution, pain/suffering, etc) and compared the evidence for God, Jesus Christ and the Bible. I imagined myself as a juror in a court of law, trying to decide one way or the other as to what to believe. I spent many months studying the case for each. To my suprise, the evidence for God & His word was overwhelming. I was forced into an uncomfortable position...part of me wanted to stay right where I was, calling myself an agnostic, so I wouldn't have to change and could keep doing all the "fun" things that I wanted...or, I could admit what I knew to be the truth and put my faith in Jesus Christ. I made the choice to put my faith in Christ and never look back. The Christian walk has not always been easy, but as Jesus Christ said in John 10:10: "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."...and abundant it truly is. » POSTED IN:
