Hipster PDA: Why?

What is the advantage of the hPDA? I've looked through a great deal of sites that concern themselves with the hipster or variants thereof. Most of them deal with the construction of the hipster, and the physical advantages it offers. So what's the advantage of the hipster otherwise? I understand what to use it for, I just don't see a huge advantage over the cheaper prebound option of a memo book. You know, those tiny little spiral notebooks that cost a few cents? They fit in a front pocket better, and are already ruled vertically. They have a hole punched already, so if need be, any tear-outs can be consolidated. They can't be re-organized, but if that's the only advantage the hPDA offers over the memo book, is it really worth it? You pay the price in the danger of losing all your cards when you remove the clip. One bump on the train, and it's 52 pick-up time. I'm not trying to nay-say the hPDA, I truly want to know.

Wanted to weigh in a...

Wanted to weigh in a bit... for me the hPDA is my "with me everywhere" input device... generally it gets used when I'm not in front of my computer. I use the 3x5's for all sorts of various things- shopping lists, etc., which are more temporal and don't need serious archiving etc. kGTD prints to 3x5 for me, so I have my inputted/organized actions from kGTD in my hPDA system as well. This tends to happen around once a week. iCal prints to 3x5 (with some fiddling), so I also have a 2-week view of appointments and schedule to jot down on the spot appointment scheduling.

The thing that made the hPDA shine for me was Levenger's Ballistic Shirt Pocket Briefcase. Without that guy, the cards were a bit of a mess, and using them was somewhat difficult.

There sometimes is a bit of a discrepancy if I take notes while talking with a colleage and don't get the notes inputted into a project folder or the computer for later perusal. So, the Hi-fi to lo-fi is easy, but the lo-fi to hi-fi takes manual input (or scanning and meta-tagging).

For me the ability to have scratch paper at the ready for any input, an inbox in my pocket, and a few DIYPlanner templates (finances, calendar, etc.) makes it very useful. Since it's not bound, I can constantly be refreshing the pack of 3x5's, and losing/working with the 3x5s that are used. A bound notebook tended to get too large for the pocket, and not being able to take out/put in more paper was a bit frustrating for my weirdo mind. :) Not to mention I'd probably be printing out the calendar every other week/every week just like I do now.

Anyways, hope this helps a bit- just a braindump of my ideas based on my experience.

Cheers!
