Help me stick to it

I flout my GTD, all the time.

I'm currently having real difficulties following my GTD routine and because of this i'm letting things slip. I've recently been getting home from work and not doing anything at all, flouting my next actions and deciding what to do there and then (which usually involves playing games or watching TV).

Today i'm sat in work and i don't even have a copy of my NA's or my moleskine to hand, i've left them abandoned at home in my bag.

I love GTD but i'm having great difficulty applying myself to it. Has anyone got any suggestions which may help me stick to my routine?

Large lists and procrastination

If we're actually accelerating our ability to work by enabling our brains, we're free-er to create new tasks for ourselves... hence, our task-list grows. Even if it's not absolutely must do's, often our brain-storms etc., will balloon. So, I think that a large list may be an indication of a working system.

After doing GTD for a while, I've come to the conclusion that I don't work as well when I have lots of choices about what to do. Aside from the pre-chosen daily lists, I've been wondering if I should rearrange my contexts or something to keep my lists shorter to start with.

I've been good at adding things to my inboxes and processing them into my lists, so I definitely have a (partially) working system. Even with paralyzingly large lists, I feel a lot less stress about forgetting things. :)

As you note, getting things checked off is also part of having a working system, and I'm doing better than I used to at that part. (Yes, I'm one of the many who said "doing" was my weak part on the poll.)

In regards to procrastination- I just posted on my blog late last week a semi-lengthy discussion of procrastination and point to a website of some researchers in Can. that have some great pod-casts and other resources for procrastinators.

I've seen that site before, but I never followed up on the podcasts. Now I've downloaded the podcasts and subscribed to their feed, so I can listen to them and get caught up. I really should dig around on that site. And I'll read your blog post, too. :)

Also- you're a GTD user, and an FP lover, eh? :) Do you also perchance enjoy smoking a pipe from time to time?

Nope, no smoking... though I am a way-out-of-practice beer snob. We all need to find ways to relax and enjoy life, even while we do other things, right?

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »

Scared Shitless
