Tricks for remembering names
Merlin Mann | Jul 10 2006
Following up on the earlier post about becoming a better listener, I get the feeling I'm not the only one with problems remembering peoples' names. So how about a few quick tips via Google for remembering names: From How to Remember Names (wittcom.com). Boy, do I ever need this one:

Andres, I believe I meant...Submitted by chris (not verified) on July 11, 2006 - 9:51am.
Andres, I believe I meant what I said. Saying the name aloud effectively "releases the energy of the remembrance of the name back into the universe". In fact, after I posted the comment, I went out and met two people. With the first, I managed to not repeat their name until it was called upon. With the second I accidently spoke the name aloud after hearing it, caught myself doing it, and to this instant I cannot remember it. Remembering is being able to follow the connection of a relationship. It takes both confidence that we will be able to remember, but it also needs a contextual relationship. I think a relationship is created automatically when someone says "Hi, my name is _____". But, by speaking the name aloud, alone, we are creating a new instance which has no meaning outside of some voodoo that we hope will work, or that I hope will work. To my original point, I don't think it's a good idea to just speak someone's name outloud after first hearing it, but it is a habit that I have :/ » POSTED IN:
