About six months ago, I read this excellent MSNBC interview about shaving (via the wiki’s shaving page), and I ended up experimenting with bits of what it suggested in my own periodic attempts at grooming. My results to date:

Foam, shmoam. No gel or foam or oil or cream has touched this face for over twenty five years, since first seeing a fellow world hitchhiker shave in the shower. If you have face accouterments like a jazz dot or sideburns, you will need a mirror, but since I've been going monk for decades, I don't even need the mirror. Just shave & feel, shave & feel. The key is to do the shaving last, and to NOT prewash your face. That way the hot water and steam have softened the beard as well as driven some of the good facial oils to the surface. You don't want to wash that oil off. The other key is to sit or kneel forward; that way all the facial hair doesn't run down the body, just straight down the drain. No chemicals, no cost, no razor burn or cuts, and no extra prep time. And my favorite razor for the past 2 years is the Xtreme3 Disposable. Last advantage: if you travel for work, you won't believe the difference in packing. Here's the list:
