Life inside one big text file
Merlin Mann | Aug 17 2005
O’Reilly Network Weblogs: Living in text files Giles takes one of the biggest, geekiest leaps you can—moving all of his stuff into a single big-ass plain text file.
This ambitious strategy—usually only whispered about among the lower geek echelons in which I dwell—seems to require a lot of confidence, planning, and familiarity with your favorite flavor of text editor. Mine’s currently TextMate, but, given what I’ve seen people like Danny do with Vim (and its incremental search-on-steroids, scripting functions, and endless shortcuts and configurability), this really reignites my resolve to hit the book and thumb through all my bookmarks again. I have been dipping into 43folders for a while now, and am absolutely staggered that no-one has yet mentioned (well, i searched for it) Treepad (www.treepad.com) text-editor / personal information manager. Features include: immense power searching tabbed side thingies (the 'tree') ability to add pics etc. strong password protection HTML generation and hyperlinks minimisable to taskbar item vast amounts of other things It basically takes the principle of 'one big file' and adds turbocharging, go-faster stripes, and a jacuzzi in the back. This is unfortunately Windows and Linux only as far as I can see, but if you use Windows (I have to, I'm afraid.) and are into the 'one big file' theory this is the best I have found by a looong way. » POSTED IN:
