Danny O'Brien: Question on geeks and games
Merlin Mann | Apr 25 2005
As you may know, Danny O’Brien and I are rumored to be working on a book for O’Reilly’s Hacks series. As we theoretically toil with this theoretical book, we’ll be lazily turning to you smart people from time to time to save our bacon. This is the first of those occasions. Thus, Danny asks… So one of the things that’s cropping up in the research is that geeks hate boredom more than other people: indeed, more than life itself. The whole “rather gnaw your own arm off??? is frightening close to reality here. Given the choice between a fractionally tedious task that will save hours of effort, and something capitivating and challenging, we’ll bunk off the former. I don’t know yet whether that’s not something that’s applicable to other people. But I am interested in linking this up with another bit of anecdata, which is that geeks often enjoy thought games and puzzles. So, here’s my question: when you have a regular, mind-crushingly dull task to do, do you have a little game you play with yourself to make it easier? If so, what is it? (Merlin reminds me to include the canonical Simpsons reference in this discussion:)

When faced with a boring...Submitted by sydney (not verified) on April 25, 2005 - 7:09am.
When faced with a boring and/or unpleasant task, my first choice is to involve someone else. Having company beats any game I can think of. When I'm on a long drive (or long wait) with someone, I will make up the first line of a story, the more outlandish the better. Then we take turns adding sentences, trying to make the other person laugh so hard they cry. This usually doesn't take long. I like to time boring tasks to coincide with long phone conversations, usually with my sister (she is a gifted talker.) A speakerphone is useful in this situation. If I don't have company, I listen to public radio, BBC-4 archives, or audio books. I've even been known to pay bills in front of the TV. When walking, I do an elaborate landscape design critique in my head as I pass each house. Or I try to beat my record of numbers of bird species seen on one walk. Problem-solving is an excellent distraction when one is bored. If I have trouble sleeping, I will think through solutions to design issues, invent new ways to use gadgets, or plan something - a meal, a party, rearranging furniture, organizing tasks. » POSTED IN:
