Danny O'Brien: Question on geeks and games
Merlin Mann | Apr 25 2005
As you may know, Danny O’Brien and I are rumored to be working on a book for O’Reilly’s Hacks series. As we theoretically toil with this theoretical book, we’ll be lazily turning to you smart people from time to time to save our bacon. This is the first of those occasions. Thus, Danny asks… So one of the things that’s cropping up in the research is that geeks hate boredom more than other people: indeed, more than life itself. The whole “rather gnaw your own arm off??? is frightening close to reality here. Given the choice between a fractionally tedious task that will save hours of effort, and something capitivating and challenging, we’ll bunk off the former. I don’t know yet whether that’s not something that’s applicable to other people. But I am interested in linking this up with another bit of anecdata, which is that geeks often enjoy thought games and puzzles. So, here’s my question: when you have a regular, mind-crushingly dull task to do, do you have a little game you play with yourself to make it easier? If so, what is it? (Merlin reminds me to include the canonical Simpsons reference in this discussion:)

singing always helps alleviate boredom...Submitted by Leah (not verified) on April 25, 2005 - 5:27am.
singing always helps alleviate boredom or get my mind working. If I find I'm stuck in a tough jam, I'll make up a song about the situation until I stumble upon the answer. For example, I once took a vertebrate zoology lab test a day late and had the whole room to myself. I couldn't remember some of the specimen classifications, so I sang to the specimens until the name just popped into my head. I think of this in a similar light to the coin toss decision making listed on the wikipedia -- singing the song allows me to clear my mind. If I'm walking for a long time and get bored, I try to make up rules about what places I can and can't walk. So, I have to follow patterns on the sections of sidewalk. I'm sure it looks weird to anyone walking by. I also do things like try to varying my walk, say, every third sidewalk panel for long ones and every 5th or 10th for shorter ones. I'll dance through some and try to imitate people thru others. Of course, I also have a stash of books with logic puzzles in them. I use those whenever I'm sitting around bored. And I always have a book or a moleskin or index cards with me. No wasted time ever. » POSTED IN:
